In June 2011, the Internal Revenue Service announced an increase in the optional standard mileage rates for 2011. Normally the Internal Revenue Service updates the standard mileage rates annually. To account for the recent increase in gasoline prices, the Internal Revenue Service decided to make a special adjustment to make the reimbursement rate more fair to taxpayers. The business, medical, and moving standard mileage rates all increased by 4.5 cents. The rate for charitable miles is set by statute and remains at 14 cents a mile. The standard mileage rates for 2011 are summarized below:
| Purpose | Rates 1/1 through 6/30/11 | Rates 7/1 through 12/31/11 |
| Business | 51 Cents per Mile | 55.5 Cents per Mile |
| Medical/Moving | 19 Cents per Mile | 23.5 Cents per Mile |
| Charitable | 14 Cents per Mile | 14 Cents per Mile |
